DIY Mackenzie Childs Inspired Accent Table Makeover
I found this table on Craig’s List. It was being sold for $40 and I thought, nice price let’s go check it out. Upon arrival, I must have looked hesitant because the guy dropped the price to $20. And as tempting as that sounded, I’d decided to pass.
Then I hear this magical word echo out.
FREE frEE free!!!!
Excuse me Sir, did you say, FREE? But of course I’ll take this table that I drove 20+ miles to see, FOR FREE. I mean what type of person would I be if I couldn’t do you this solid and take it off of your hands.
And off we went. My table and I.
So, here sits my free table. Isn’t it a beaut? I always had plans on doing something with it, just wasn’t sure what. It just so happens, I was invited to join a YouTUBE collaboration that required we make over or update an item that was given to us for free and I thought, PERFECT! What better choice than this table.
As I combed through Pinterest looking for inspiration, Mackenzie Childs kept circling my mind. I had planned on doing another project with the whimsical pattern and hadn’t yet. So, I decided to do an Mackenzie Childs inspired piece.
So, without further ado, please continue scrolling for the photo step-through. And enjoy.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this step-through. What do you think about Mackenzie Childs design? She has the whole Alice in Wonderland in the bag, doesn’t she? I personally like her pieces. I could and would place this unique look in my home, but only in small quantities. Tell me your thoughts below.
Well, I’ve gotta run. I swear I just saw the Madd Hatter!!!! :o) Until next time, take care.
Guess what!? I’ve created a YouTube video for this post. If you have time, check it out. While you’re there subscribe, because I’d love to have you?

Congratulations!!Happy Holidays, this table is very creat I’ve and beautiful in 8ts finished stage. You used some wonderful, soft coloring to complete the project t. I, personally love it. I also watched the windowseat creation, and loved it also. With these two pieces, theIr are a variety of ways you can finish them, both petite table and window seat, but can appreciate the airy colors and products used to finish them. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Holidays and thanks for sharing Mackenzie!! I really like the color scheme for this table so much I shared your idea with him and he remembered an old table in our storage shed similiar.
Before we placed a skirt aroubd the legs to match my sons room and used it as a telephone table. We found it an hour ago and are sanding it down to remove the color and design, and over the next two weeks will reset, paint and add a bit of a trim to it to update and dress it up. I decided to pull the round tip off and look for a square pattern that can be exchanged.
Your table gave us new ideas for a den or our sons old bedroom we’re up doing together. The piping along the edge looks great on yours in white. Thanks again for your creativity, and design ideas. Dehliaa~
Hi Dehiliaa!!! I am so glad I could inspire you to create something fabulous with your table. I would love to see a picture of it. It sounds amazing. Do you have Instagram? I hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 🙂
This came out so nice! You have patience girl! I am so bad at painting, you put in so much detail-love it!
Hey Carli! Thanks for stopping by. Girl yes, I enjoy painting. I get lost in thoughts and next thing you know, it’s done. Thank you so much. I want to do a few more of these pieces. Have a blessed day. 🙂
Ms. Angela i really enjoyed your video. You are so creative. That table looks as if you would have bought it. At one of those very expensive stores. I will have to try it. You make it look so easy. Thank you for sharing your ideas. You have a blessed day as wel.
Hi Maria! Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it. What do you think you will try this pattern on? A table like me or another item? It looks good on smaller items too if you want to test the waters? I was thinking about recreating it on the clear chargers you can get from the Dollar Tree. Please share pics of whatever you decide. 🙂
Thanks so much for the step by step. I especially appreciate the technique you use for the checks on the table leg (?). I always wondered how to get the checks progressively larger as the piece gets larger. Now I know. Will be using this technique on a table I am painting . Thanks again.
You are so welcome. Glad it was helpful. Have a good week.
Love it! Thank you for the great step by step. The painters tape up the leg was an awesome hack. I would have been trying to measure spacing or something stupid like that! Thanks again!
Hahaha! So glad you’ve found it useful 🙂
What a great table you made the old one into! Love it!
Thanks Mary
The table is so beautiful! Don’t ask me why I could look at McKenzie Childs for hours. I need to buy painter’s tape!
Thank you so much. I completely understand, and you’re not alone. I even painted a niche in my home with the check pattern. ☺️
I adore your talent and creativity… I, too, am awestruck with McKenzie Childs designs.. Great tips on the table video… I have a ton of things to transform.. I , so appreciate your video.. extremely helpful!!!
Thank you so much. I’m so glad you liked it. How can I be a resource to you?
Wow! That is gorgeous! Well done!
Thank you 🙂
I have done some of these MC pieces and I know what is involved! What a great job you did, especially when it comes to graduating those squares from small to large on the pedestal. I did a hutch and it took me almost a month. I also really like MC pieces but agree that it best in small doses. Very creative, you’ll love it for years!! Most of my dining room is centered around the colors in my hutch. Great fun. I loved your video.
Oh wow!!! I can imagine how detailed the hutch would have to be. I bet it’s beautiful. I absolutely love how Whimsical MC items are. Do you have a link where I can check out your hutch?
Any possibility you sell a table like this one?
I am a complete incompetent when it comes to making anything even remotely like this adorable one!
Sure. I would have to look for a round table like this. Not unless you prefer a different shape.
Most FABOLOUSstep by step instructions! Thank you so much for taking the time to put your beautiful work on Pintrist. I now have the inspiration and know-how to start on that table I’ve been fretting over!
Thank you so much for your kind words. So glad you liked it!!
Hello! This is beautiful!
Can you provide exact paint color names …photo is hard to read. Thank you!!
White, Black, Ceramcoat Select Satin – True Turquoise, and Ceramcoat Select Satin – harvest Gold
This is beautiful and you make it look so easy. Thanks for showing how to use the painter’s tape… is it hard to get the tape on straight? any tips for that? Thanks for sharing your awesome taletnt!
I used a ruler first to mark lines, the lined up the painter’s tape with the lines. That made it a lot easier.
The best instruction video ever! Thank you! I cannot stand long, super detailed, stating the obvious and re-stating the obvious about 100 times wasting our time DIY videos. Your video is the best! Straight forward, short but informative. It shows all the explanation needed! Absolutely perfect!!!
Thank you and you’re welcome.
wonderful transformation – thanks for your video I enjoyed watching
I’m trying to paint stripes on a table, but the painters tape took off parts of the base coat…how long do u have to let the paint dry before using painter’s tape on it?
24-48hrs and you should be good to go. I may have worked on this a few minutes at a time over several days. While one piece was drying, I’d work on another. Also, if it still takes parts off, you can go over them later. Hope that helps.
You are very very clever, Angela. You are BEYOND generous to take the time to do step by step. I have a sofa table just waiting for me make the time to start. Before I do, would you please tell me which sealer you used. Sealer has always been problematic for me. Is the sealer product you used a “favorite” of yours? What other sealer brands do you use frequently that are brush on. Thank you.
Hi and thank you for leaving a comment. I can’t remember what I used for this, but I had to guess I used Zinsser BullsEye Shellac sealer spray. This is a favorite of mine. I use it on all of my furniture that I repaint. Hope this helps.
Wowowowowowow!!!
You make it look easier then I was aware and the table came out looking really great. Have you ever used any other colors. Like white and dark purple. Purple is my favorite color.
Love this! I love how you give step by step instructions this is the best one that I have seen! I can’t wait to try this!
Brava! What a great job with a stunning outcome. Love it. Thanks for the inspiration.
So classy and whimsical at the same time.
I’m looking for inspiration to paint an ice-cream parlor chair with a courtly check seat. Can’t decide how to paint the back and legs.
Thank you! I absolutely adore this pattern. I think it would look awesome on chair legs.
